Do I need counseling?
Maternal mental health is as much a reality in military families, as it is in the civilian world. Active duty women in the military and civilian wives of service members are special subgroups of women with unique perinatal experiences.
Military-specific family stressors include frequent relocations to worldwide duty stations, geographic distance from support networks, and deployments of service members. These compound the already known risk factors that contribute to depression/anxiety during pregnancy or postpartum.
It is very lonely and isolating to relocate to a new community or country and not know how to get to places such as a shopping center, park, or movie theater. If you're a dependent spouse and your service member partner is away at a military training, you might be out-of-contact for days or weeks. You may notice that you're feeling irritable or sad. You wonder how you'll be able to do this alone.
Although there are many military-related resources available for depression or anxiety, you might want to access civilian counseling services for convenience, privacy, and readily available appointments. Postpartum Wellness has therapists that can meet with you in our office, online, or in your home.
What does therapy look like at Postpartum Wellness?
We are here for you!
Postpartum Wellness provides expert individual therapy for perinatal depression for women from Virginia, Maryland, and Washington, DC because we believe in the healing power of connection.
Our premier services are designed to incorporate the latest research while offering relational, compassionate and solution-focused treatment. Treatment draws directly from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy as well as Interpersonal Therapy to provide you with a holistic approach to healing.
Each session is completely confidential and held here in the comfort of our McLean office (1305 Vincent Place, McLean, VA 22101). We also offer counseling online or in your home. We often work together in collaboration with your primary care physician to ensure your success, as well as to provide medication options for addressing issues with chemical imbalances if relevant.
The initial session is called the “intake interview,” which involves a thorough review of your life story and current situation. This allows us to accurately pinpoint the problem and collaborate on a plan moving forward. From there, we meet for regular individual therapy sessions – which is where the real work begins.
As you begin counseling for perinatal depression, you can learn to:
Break free from the depression spiral
Relax and sleep well
Build connection and love for your child
Use coping strategies that actually work
Feel confident and have self-control
Think positively and understand your emotions
Find wellness and joy
We call our practice Postpartum Wellness for a reason.
We started this practice because we are passionate about providing a safe and caring space for women to process their pregnancy and postpartum experiences. The silent struggle that many women experience impacts their relationships with self, partner, friends, family, colleagues, and the rest of society. The shame and stigma around pregnancy and postpartum stress needs to be recognized – and I want to be part of that change.
If you or a loved one is struggling with depression, anxiety, or other issues, let us help. Contact us today to get started on your wellness journey.
